Securing Your Home On A Budget

With the holiday season upon us, burglars and thieves are just getting started.  New gifts, busy schedules, and traveling out of town can leave you and your home vulnerable.  This season, make sure you are taking the necessary precautions to prevent your home from being burglarized.

 Doors:

• Dead bolts
• Reinforcing latches
• Door reinforcers
• Door jammers

 Basement:

• Security bars
• If your basement has any exterior doors, see above

 Garage/Toolshed:

• Motion sensitive lights
• Security padlock
• Above door precautions

 Perimeter of house:

• Motion sensitive lights
• Securing windows

 If you’re traveling out of town for an extended period of time:

• Tell a neighbor you trust to keep an eye out for suspicious activity
• Invest in setting up lights in your house to go off on timers
• Have someone collect your mail
• If there’s any extra cars at your house, have someone move them around periodically
• Have someone take care of your lawn (if applicable)
• Have someone take your trashcans down to the street/put them back
• Invest in a security system if necessary
